Yellow Hours
Acrylic & pigment on canvas · 150 × 120 cm · 2025
Six vertical strokes, laid down in a single afternoon and never corrected. The soft yellow that runs through the lettering of this entire gallery was mixed for this canvas first — two parts Naples yellow, one part raw titanium, a breath of ochre.
It hung in the studio facing north for a full year before I agreed to show it. Paintings should be allowed to wait. This one waited, and the waiting is visible in the edges, where the colour was left unresolved on purpose.

Six ways
into the work
Every room is a different speed. Take the paintings slowly, the photographs quickly, the poems last.
Painting
Abstract, geometric, conceptual and figurative — the full body of canvas work.
Installations
Site-specific hangs for darkened rooms, long corridors and one very large empty wall.
Photo Lab
Silver gelatin portraits and pigment landscapes, plus the photocollage experiments.
New Works 2026
Six pieces finished this year, shown together for the first time.
Poetry
Short pieces kept in the studio notebooks. Read them after the paintings, never before.
New Works 2026
Javier Galán
I paint slowly,
and I paint
over everything.
Born in Valladolid, working in Madrid since 1998. Oil, cold wax, raw pigment and, more and more, the camera. Most of what you see here was painted twice — the first version is still underneath.
Eleven solo exhibitions, work in four public collections, and a studio on the fourth floor with a north window that decides when the day is over.
New work, twice a year.
Nothing else.
Studio notes, exhibition dates and first sight of available works — sent in June and December.
